Our Story

The Doggy Bag dog bakery and gift shop opened in April of 2003, quite by chance.

The idea began during one of our walks around nearby Fowler Lake with our son’s dog, Cinnamon, a beautiful Siberian Husky who became our dog when our son moved away. You know how that is! We made our usual stop at Cinnamon’s favorite store, a local dog bakery in historic downtown Oconomowoc for his usual ginger squirrel dog treat. We learned the dog bakery was going to close. By the time we made it back home, we had plans to talk to the owners and buy the business. 

The Doggy Bag all natural dog bakery and gift shop was born

Our friends and family were as excited as we were about our new adventure and offered to help. They painted the brightly-colored plaster dog heads that adorn the walls and still welcome our visitors today.

Our customers are also greeted by hundreds of dogs – well, dog photos of our “best customers” that are on display in a gigantic frame that covers an entire wall. We have over 1,000 photos and counting… so many we’ve had to add photo albums to display them all! Our customers love seeing their best friend’s photo, and we enjoy meeting all of the dogs and giving them the star treatment when they visit.

Freshly-baked doggie treats made with 100% natural ingredients

Using all natural ingredients and taste-tested recipes from the previous owners, we began baking and adding new doggy treats: Grrreat big decorated bones, dog birthday cakes, pizza, pretzels, wheat-free items, baked cat treats, and seasonal favorites like s'mores.

We bake our dog treats from scratch in the store every day, so you can enjoy the rich, fresh-baked smell of treats in the oven, as well as samples for your pooch to taste test. Maybe your dog will help us decide if a new doggy treat will stay on the menu!

Dog toys, clothing, and other pet-themed gift items

The Doggy Bag is stocked with a great selection of collars, leashes, bowls, dog toys, and beds.  We always have the seasonal items you’re looking for dog clothing including: fashionable coats, sweaters, and boots for the cold months and lifejackets and water toys for the summer. If you are looking for a special gift for a pet lover, we carry unique dog and cat-themed gifts like t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, candles, notecards, artwork, and more.

Our official taste tester is our own adopted dog, Duncan, a rescue dog we were told is a mix of Portuguese Water dog, Poodle, and Old English Sheepdog. Duncan is a shy boy who lounges on the steps in the front of the store just waiting for the next lucky dog to come into our dog bakery. There is always fresh water and, of course, free doggie treats to sample.
